About Blonde Passenger

Blonde Passenger is the alternative rock project of Munich-based airline pilot Andreas Thiele. Born from songs written during the uncertainty of the pandemic, the project blends 90s and early 2000s-inspired alternative rock with stories of love, longing and the darker sides of romance. Some are lived, some imagined, and some somewhere in between. What started as songwriting during a time when Thiele feared he might never return to the cockpit eventually became Blonde Passenger. He did return. The songs stayed.

“Roses Fade Away” is a song about holding on when something you love seems to be slipping away.

On the surface, the lyrics read like a farewell to a person, an old friend, a relationship, a shared past. But the song was written during the pandemic, when Andreas Thiele faced the possibility of losing his career as an airline pilot and wondered whether a life he had known for years might suddenly be over.

That uncertainty became a song about time, memory and the instinct to hold on. Against a distinctly 90s-influenced alternative rock sound, a melodic lead guitar carries one of the song’s central images: roses that were once red slowly turning black.

The official music video for “Roses Fade Away”, directed by Andy Groh, brings the song’s dark-romantic world to life through two contrasting visual settings.

Predominantly black-and-white performance scenes were filmed in a quarry near Nuremberg, while the story unfolds inside a church, where roses, candlelight and religious imagery create a darker, almost ritualistic atmosphere. Colour sequences follow a grieving bride in white, seemingly lost and alone, until she encounters a mysterious woman dressed in black.

As their stories begin to intertwine, the contrast between bride and widow, white and black, love and loss becomes the visual heart of the film – building towards an unexpected final encounter.

THE STORY

Blonde Passenger was never really part of the plan.

Long before there was an artist project, Andreas Thiele had built a very different life as an airline pilot. Music had always been there, but mostly somewhere in the background. He only learned to play guitar as an adult, inspired by an intimate living-room concert arranged by the man who would later become his husband – and who proposed to him that same night.

Years later, when the pandemic brought aviation almost to a standstill, music suddenly became something else. Faced with the very real possibility that he might never return to the cockpit, Thiele began writing the songs that would eventually become Blonde Passenger.

Most of them were written during his years in Cologne, somewhere between uncertainty, relationships, imagination and real life. Some tell stories that happened. Others tell stories that could have happened – or perhaps should have.

The name came later, and completely by accident. After years of searching for an artist name that felt right, Thiele unexpectedly made it to a friend’s birthday in Greece – a party he had originally been unable to attend. Stepping out of a taxi with his hair bleached blond, the surprised birthday boy greeted him with a joke: “Here comes the blonde passenger.”

Thiele knew immediately that he had found the name.

Today, Blonde Passenger makes alternative rock shaped by love, longing, loss and the darker corners of romance, with a strong affection for the sound and attitude of the 1990s and early 2000s.

The first single, “Roses Fade Away,” sounds like a song about watching someone leave. In reality, it was born from the fear of losing an entirely different love: flying. Written during the uncertainty of the pandemic, the song captured a moment when Thiele genuinely believed his life as a pilot might be over.

It wasn’t. He eventually returned to the cockpit.

The songs stayed.
